The writing on the back of the infamous green Zara jacket already said how first lady and noted birther Melania Trump really felt about her public relations stunt at the Texas border back in June 2018, when she toured a detention facility holding children kidnapped from their families by her husband’s administration: “I really don’t care. Do U?” She really didn’t—and is now confirming that in her own words in a “profanity-laced rant” secretly recorded by a former aide, The New York Times reports.
In that audio, Trump makes it clear she was already irritated by having to put together the White House’s holiday celebration—“Who gives a fuck about the Christmas stuff and decorations?”—when folks dared to make a fuss about her husband’s state-sanctioned kidnapping. “I say that I’m working on Christmas and planning for the Christmas and they said, ‘Oh, what about the children that they were separated?’” she says in a clearly mocking tone. “Give me a fucking break.”
Further account of the audio continues to reveal that the true ideology of Melania Trump—who helped spread the racist birther lie that Barack Obama wasn’t born in the U.S.—is really no different than her husband’s. “Yeah, they’re not with parents, it’s sad,” she claimed according to Huffington Post. “But when they come here alone or with coyotes or illegally, you know, you need to do something.” That is, of course, a lie: “many families entered legally and were separated anyway,” noted immigration reporter Caitlin Dickerson.
“In one part of the conversation, according to CNN, Mrs. Trump questioned whether the mothers and children who claimed to have been subject to violence in their home countries were really lying to Border Patrol officials,” The New York Times continues. Trump claims in the audio that families seeking asylum in the U.S. are actually coached on what to say, basically calling them liars when they say they fear violence if they are sent back to their home countries. “They are teached by other people what to say to come over and to, you know, let them go to stay here,” she continues.
Trump then complains about these families not instead staying in Mexico, saying “they don’t want to stay in Mexico because Mexico doesn’t take care of them the same as America does.” She must’ve been ecstatic, then, about a Trump administration policy announced later that same year that has forced tens of thousands of asylum-seekers to wait out their immigration court cases in Mexico.
The administration has claimed “Migrant Protection Protocols,” or Remain in Mexico, has kept asylum-seekers safe, but in stunning video admitted quite the opposite. Leading organization Human Rights First has in fact tracked hundreds of reports of of murder, torture, rape, kidnapping, and other violence against asylum-seekers sent to Mexico by the administration. And under stacked immigration courts, a devastatingly tiny number of asylum-seekers have been successful in winning protections.
And if it’s children seeking safety that’s truly pissed off the first lady, she must be even more pleased on that front in more recent days. White House aide and noted white supremacist Stephen Miller has exploited the novel coronavirus pandemic to unlawfully block children and families from asylum altogether, quickly expelling these kids out of the U.S. in violation of anti-trafficking law, and without an immigration court hearing.
Because many kids haven’t even been assigned identifying information after they’ve been taken into U.S. custody, advocates have said many have been “virtually impossible” to locate after being kicked out.
”Lawyers have fielded frantic calls from family members whose children suddenly went missing after crossing the U.S. border,” Lomi Kriel reported for ProPublica and The Texas Tribune this past August. “Of the thousands of unaccompanied minors expelled under the health order, advocacy organizations said that they have only found about three dozen after months of searching across the United States, Mexico and Central America.”
Sure, but it’s these asylum-seeking children and their families who are liars and dangerous and cheats and are creating the inconvenience for her, when she’d rather be dealing with White House Christmas holiday shit even if it’s pretty annoying to her instead of any of the criticism and political fallout over one of the worst humanitarian disasters in modern U.S. history. “They say I’m complicit,” she reportedly continued in the audio. “I’m the same like him, I support him. I don’t say enough. I don’t do enough.” I really don’t care. Do U?
