Does Sen. Susan Collins know that her vote for Brett Kavanaugh put her “moderate” reputation up in smoke? Or is she just that desperate as she trails in polls with less than two weeks to go before the elections? Either way, Collins seemed extremely happy to get an endorsement that does not exactly scream “moderate Republican willing to work across the aisle.”
Collins nabbed an endorsement from the Christian Civic League of Maine, a group that’s opposed to reproductive rights and LGBTQ rights. It’s not exactly the Human Rights Campaign or Planned Parenthood Action Fund, both groups that abandoned her in 2020 after endorsing her in previous years. But Collins doesn’t seem to mind.
“Let me thank you so much for the endorsement and tell you how truly grateful I am for your support, for the League’s support,” Collins told Christian Civic League of Maine executive director Carroll Conley.
CCL of Maine works with the Family Research Council and the Alliance Defending Freedom, both designated as hate groups by the Southern Poverty Law Center, HuffPost points out, and supports conversion therapy.
”It is impossible to reconcile welcoming the endorsement of an organization that sought to out Maine legislators, opposes marriage equality and that actively demeans and attacks transgender children with Collins’ previously expressed views,” HRC’s Lucas Acosta responded to Collins’ gratitude for the endorsement.
Apparently trying to pretend to be a reasonable moderate isn’t working for Collins anymore, so she’s dropping the pretense.
