Yesterday the USA clicked over 700 deaths per million population from the coronavirus, joining just eight loser countries with that shameful record. The others are Ecuador (711), Chile (732), Bolivia (742), Brazil (744), Spain (758), Belgium (962) and Peru (1,036). All data is from www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/.
Note that six of these eight are in the Americas.
The USA has surged ahead of most of the countries badly affected in the early months of the pandemic. These include Britain (672), Italy (627), France (548), Iran (400), Ireland (383) and Germany (124).
It is intriguing to note that the worst-affected twenty nations include ten classified by the UNHRC as very highly developed (shown in red on the chart, above) and ten less advanced nations.
This suggests wealth and scientific advancement cannot compensate for political ineptitude and stupidity.
In stark contrast to the USA’s appalling 703 deaths per million up to yesterday, these nations appear to have handled the crisis well, with the following low deaths per million population:
Australia: 35
Pakistan: 30
Uruguay: 16
Japan: 14
Hong Kong: 14
Cuba: 11
South Korea: 9
Malaysia: 8
New Zealand: 5
China: 3
Thailand: 0.8
Vietnam: 0.4
Taiwan: 0.3
