If you need an example of why Democrats should not believe that even the biggest landslide on Tuesday means our problems are solved, consider this Washington Post report on Fox News owner Rupert Murdoch’s thinking about this election. Murdoch thinks Donald Trump is toast—but he also thinks it could be good for business in his right-wing news empire.
According to an unnamed “Murdoch executive,” Fox News could turn itself into “the standard-bearer of the resistance” during a Biden presidency.
“If anything, I think they will be more successful,” a former Fox News staffer said. “There’s going to be an audience for Biden controversy.” And as we’ve seen with the attempts to make a Hunter Biden scandal happen, not just Fox News but the whole Murdoch news empire—including the New York Post and Wall Street Journal—is willing to participate in trying to manufacture that.
The far right is not going to give up. From QAnon and white supremacist domestic terrorists to billionaire Rupert Murdoch, they are going to do their best to tank a Biden presidency—and with it, the nation, if that’s what it takes.
This is why we need Democrats to win big and then not lapse into complacency. We’re all exhausted, but we need to keep the fighting spirit we’ve developed during the Trump years, no matter what happens.
