On the day of the historic Vice Presidential debate featuring Kamala Harris, the first AAPI woman named to a major national ticket--- let’s recognize all the smart and strong Asian American and Pacific Islander women who have made this a better world.
This is a picture of my mom, Shui Kuen Chin. At the age of 17, the Hong Kong high school student was set up in an arranged marriage to my dad, Allen, a native Detroiter. She was forced to drop out of school and move to America. The only thing she knew about her new hometown was that the city made cars and that it snowed. Despite not graduating from high school and having to work in our family’s Chinese restaurant, she was able to send all of her six kids to college, several with advanced degrees. Thanks, mom!
