It’s only two days away from the election. Voters have been voting in various states for weeks now, racking up unprecedented numbers of votes. The demographic trends are encouraging for our side, with far more young voters than usual showing up, and surely, Democrats have been waiting for four years to pry Trump out of the White House. But Republicans are also motivated, and they will be voting in large numbers, too.
Living in a state (Pennsylvania) that never had early voting until COVID forced the issue, I deposited my ballot (and hubby’s too) in the county drop box two weeks ago, and confirmed their receipt. Most of the Democrats I know have done the same. But we won’t know the outcome before Election Day. Indeed, there’s a good chance we won’t know the outcome immediately after Election Day either. Republicans well might have the advantage with Election Day voting, as they are not taking COVID seriously (and Trump told them to distrust mail-in voting), and as has been reported elsewhere, if he can get away with it (and even if he rationally can’t), if the reported vote totals favor him before midnight on Election Day, he will declare victory and release his phalanx of flying monkeys to states still counting ballots and file injunctions to get them to stop. Pennsylvania is anticipated to be one of those states. Following could be a judicial nightmare culminating in a possible Trump coronation by the Supreme Court, whose composition has been specially formulated by Trump and McConnell for just such a moment.
Under these prospects, I’m feeling, well, not very calm. As the day approaches, I’m having more trouble sleeping (and more, um, remedies that allow me to sleep). There’s a shit storm coming, and there will be nowhere to hide from it. Our only hope is that Biden wins in enough states further down the list than Pennsylvania that report their vote totals immediately to give him a clear electoral vote win before midnight, and even then, I’m sure Trump will challenge that outcome.
And of course, we also need to win some crucial Senate seats, or it’s all for naught.
There’s no way out but through. But in the meantime…
I’m tense and nervous and I can’t relax...

Here is a lovely thread (Top Threads?) from Denise Oliver Velez’s #BlackMusicSunday offering on Thelonious Monk. Nice interchange between the author, leftyguitarist, and Jarl van Hoother.
