Two days ago, I submitted my semester grades. I am continuing to adapt to remote teaching methods. The process of grading improved somewhat with the use of a university-issued i-Pad and pencil, making it possible to grade assignments and tests without the time-consuming process of printing, grading, scanning and uploading these assignments. There is still plenty of room for improvement, but the problem is not the technology; it’s me. I’m not as diligent as I used to be, and with retirement just around the corner (from an institution that may not survive the financial crisis induced by coronavirus on top of decades of administrative incompetence), it’s getting harder to care.
With grades in, I now have an interval in which to concentrate on other things, and there are a number of tasks that must be done. Hubby and I have bought a house in California for our retirement, and months ago, we thought winter break would be a good time to rent a U-Haul, pack up stuff we don’t need on a daily basis, and move it out to the new house. However, as the pandemic became more dire, it became clear that carrying out this plan would be insane. We’re not going anywhere this winter, and we don’t even know what kind of environment we’ll be teaching in next semester. In the case of my university, the plan was to bring more students to be on campus, but it’s likely to be an even more dangerous environment in the spring than it was in the fall. I’m hoping that the administration comes to its senses.
Be that as it may, there is stuff to be done—and I have spent the last two days sitting on the couch staring at my computer (a lot of the time reading daily kos). Hubby has been industrious, clearing the closet and his chests of drawers of clothing he no longer needs in anticipation of the big move. Me? Nothing. I realize that it’s good to have a fallow period after a period of frenetic activity, for the sake of recovery, but we really can’t afford my being fallow for every long. There’s too much to do.
So we’ll see if I can do something productive tomorrow.
In the meantime, fate has designated that a goy (me) is hosting Top Comments on the first night of Hanukkah. But the doesn’t mean I can’t wish my Jewish friends happy holidays, and close with an appropriate song:
