I have been mentioning my table top veggie garden. I have not a gentleman farmer, being neither of those descriptions but here are some pictures. They are all covered with netting to deter bugs and birds.
As you can see by Itzl's concerned look, this group is for us to check in at to let people know we are alive, doing OK, and not affected by such things as heat, blizzards, floods, wild fires, hurricanes, tornadoes, power outages, or other such things that could keep us off DKos. If you're not here, or anywhere else on DKos, and there are adverse conditions in your area (floods, heatwaves, hurricanes, etc.), we are going to check up on you. If you are going to be away from your computer for a day or a week, let us know here. We care!
IAN is a great group to join, and a good place to learn to write diaries. Drop one of us a PM to be added to the Itzl Alert Network anytime! We all share the publishing duties, and we welcome everyone who reads IAN to write diaries for the group! Every member is an editor, so anyone can take a turn when they have something to say, photos and music to share, a cause to promote or news!

This flat has basil, two kinds of parsley, green onions and the taller plant is a poblano pepper. They are good for chili rellenos. There are three or four little peppers on it. The green onions are from the grocery store and I plant them until I need them so that they continue to grow and stay fresh. I don’t remember where I saw that idea but it is the best. I cut the green ends as I need them and finally use the onion when needed but it usually has at least doubled in size when I get to it. It can be hard to get them out of the ground because the roots spread quickly.
These are Golden Cross cabbages. They mature in 42 days, according to the little card. They are just beginning to curl in but I have never seen cabbage grow, so I don’t know what to expect. Every day is new. The leaves are so firm and deep green that these plants are lovely even if they weren’t edible. I am excited about them.
I have forgotten the kind of tomatoes but they are beautiful plump little guys right now. I may have to enlarge the netting so that the branches can expand but they are doing well. It is “determinate”, meaning the vine only grows 2 ft tall.
I have been referring to them as the table top veggies because they were on a table in the garden but the sun has moved in the season and there is not enough sunlight for them so we moved them out onto the drive way. I am somewhat apprehensive about their well being, thieves and squirrels, but I am taking that chance. Razzle protected them in the garden but we’ll have to see what happens on the drive. Whatever, it was not expensive to do and has been a learning experience for this little old lady.
Just an aside-
I had a neighbor from Viet Nam who planted his entire property with veggies and a rice patty (that he had to remove due to mosquito abatement). I watched the plants grow but could not talk to him about them because of language differences. One night, I dreamed I was looking at plants that had little wrapped bars of Ivory soap growing. I told him I didn’t know Ivory soap grew and he said yes, and that they picked them when they were little like this for the hotels and then let the rest mature to full size. I was amazed about that but didn’t think it strange that we could talk to each other in my dream. I loved this dream, one of the few I have remembered over the years.
Be safe and be well.
