Sorry everyone but he admitted he lied about masks.
There seem to be many people in America who are unaware that Dr Fauci admitted he lied to us about wearing masks early on. He did it for an arguably good reason: to make sure healthcare workers had access. I would argue it was a bad decision. Personally, I think that was his opportunity to tell us the truth, expose the Trump admin as intentionally lying to people about the virus, and yes… lose his job if that’s what it took. Showing that Trump was intentionally lying early on would have arguably been a greater service to the country than anything Fauci did afterwards that couldn’t have been done by someone else like him. Many will disagree with me on that, but we can’t be in denial about the lie itself. Personally, I think more lives would have been saved if Americans knew the Trump admin was engaged in a coverup and then subsequently mistrusted the admin’s rose-colored forecasts. Again, my opinion.
We all had the right to protect ourselves. We had the right to know the real facts and to wear masks early on. Sure, Americans are selfish and probably would have bought up all the masks. I wouldn’t have, but those of us who would have shopped responsibly had the right to protect ourselves. If we had, maybe the US wouldn’t have the worst Covid record on the planet. Dr Fauci and the Trump admin took away our right in that regard. And the lie, the conflicting messaging... it probably did lead to the resistance to wear masks by a large number of people… again, in my opinion.
Despite the public lionization of Dr Fauci for the many many things he did right, we do need to be honest about what really happened and hold people accountable for lying to us if they did. Most people don’t seem to be aware of Fauci’s mask lie. And because of the lie, I also personally don’t believe that Dr Fauci should be on Biden’s Covid team, if for no other reason than it gives Republicans like Rubio the opportunity to say that one of Biden’s top people lied to us (correct) and can’t be trusted going forward (less true). Fauci’s a good person and was put in a tough spot, no doubt. But I think he made the wrong decision to toe Trump’s lie on the issue of masks early on. That’s just my opinion, but we need to be clear about one point:
Dr. Fauci Admits Feds Initially Misled About Face Masks: ‘Wanted to Make Sure Health Care Workers’ Had Enough
The federal government initially told Americans not to wear face masks in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic at least partially to ensure health care workers had an adequate supply, Dr. Anthony Fauci admitted, despite telling the public that masks wouldn’t be effective in stopping the spread of the virus.
“We were concerned the public health community, and many people were saying this, were concerned that it was at a time when personal protective equipment, including the N95 masks and the surgical masks, were in very short supply,” Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and public face head of the federal government’s coronavirus response, told The Street in an interview this week.
