The Donald J. Trump for President Campaign just filed a defamation lawsuit against the New York Times, for a commentary piece published on the opinion page about Trump and Russia.
Seriously.
This is so obviously a campaign ploy it's comical. The Complaint will be dismissed, but the Trump campaign will fund-raise off it in the meantime - "help us fight the evil liberal New York Times, contribute today." And if it's not dismissed by the Court, it will be voluntarily dismissed by the plaintiff when the choice is to provide discovery, including a deposition of Trump himself, or walking away from the case.
The gamble here is that they can raise more money on this BS lawsuit than they'll have to pay in fees to the NY Times after the court imposes sanctions. Unfortunately, they're probably right, which is why the court should also go after the attorneys' licenses. That's the only way to keep them from using the courts as campaign tools.
