The Super Bowl is an American ritual, and there are some people who tune in not for the football, but for the commercials or the halftime show. Count me as one of the latter.
I was curious what the public reaction would be to a show featuring two Latina superstars, Shakira and Jennifer Lopez, also known as J-Lo. So while watching the show, I kept one eye on Twitter. I was not disappointed.
Not that other parts of the spectacle weren’t important, but the abject stupidity of the current White House occupant was on display—yet again, which former Sen. Claire McCaskill was quick to point out.
Currently, #TrumpIsAnIdiot and #MissouriNotKansas are trending on Twitter.
The Super Bowl event opened with ritual racist disrespect of Native Americans.
I was glad to see pushback.
The halftime show proved to be an opportunity for more ignorant responses from MAGAts and xenophobes to be displayed to the world, requiring others to call it out. First: The Puerto Rican flag is not Cuban.
Next: Speaking Spanish is not political.
Of course, many Puerto Ricans took pride in seeing “la bandera Puertorriqueña” being displayed.
The show also issued a pointed reminder: Puerto Ricans are not immigrants.
The show did highlight the fate of immigrants. For me, the most poignant part of half-time, which is probably going to be overlooked by many viewers, was the segment with J-Lo’s daughter, Emme Maribel Muñiz, singing as children joined her—from their cages.
I have to admit my biggest belly laughs of the night were prompted by Twitterati posting their imagined responses of disgruntled Trump supporters.
I’m curious—did you watch the Super Bowl halftime show?
In case you missed it, and care to see it, here’s the full performance.
