“A high prevalence of vitamin D insufficiency worldwide, now appears important in a wide range of pulmonary diseases including viral and bacterial respiratory infection, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and cancer…. Vitamin D promotes innate immune responses essential for the early protection against pathogens. This includes enhancing the synthesis of antimicrobial peptides such as cathelicidin and other vitamin D regulated molecules with antibacterial, antimycobacterial and antiviral actions.” thorax.bmj.com/...
The President and his medical professionals held a press conference recently, and addressed the disparity among African American people dying from this disease.
Dr. Bobblehead Fauci stood at the podium and said, "We have known forever that diseases like diabetes, hypertension, obesity and asthma are disproportionately afflicting African Americans. Therefore they are susceptible to this virus." I'm paraphrasing.
The medical community theorizes that because African Americas in general, have good bone density, their prevalence to be vitamin D deficient is not a big deal. This is shocking when you consider all the various medical conditions they are predisposed to,…. just so happens to be strongly correlated to vitamin D deficiency.
Below are studies on the diseases Dr. Fauci mentioned that people of color are predisposed to….
"The consequences of low 25(OH)D status include increased risk of various chronic diseases, ranging from hypertension to diabetes to cancer."
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4571146/
"Epidemiological data also indicate a low vitamin D status in tuberculosis, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, inflammatory bowel diseases, hypertension, and specific types of cancer." https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12720576
"vitamin D and calcium insufficiency causes cellular dysfunction in many organs and biological systems, and, therefore, increases the risk of diseases, particularly of osteoporosis, colorectal and breast cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus type I, metabolic syndrome, diabetes mellitus type II, hypertension and cardiovascular disease." https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19724293
"In addition to skeletal disorders, vitamin D insufficiency is a risk factor for malignancies, particularly of the colon, breast and prostate gland, as well as for chronic inflammatory and autoimmune diseases (insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, inflammatory bowel disease, multiple sclerosis, etc.)." https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16886667
"Vitamin D is a potent immunomodulator capable of dampening inflammatory signals in several cell types involved in the asthmatic response. Its deficiency has been associated with increased inflammation, exacerbations, and overall poor outcomes in patients with asthma." https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/28449868
'Vitamin D deficiency has been linked to increased severity and exacerbations of symptoms in asthmatic patients. It has been shown to modulate both immune and structural cells, including ASM cells, in inflammatory diseases. Given that current asthma therapies have not been successful in reversing airway remodeling, vitamin D supplementation as a potential therapeutic option has gained a great deal of attention." https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/26634624
"Vitamin D has been suggested as a protective compound for diabetes mellitus. Several mechanisms linking vitamin D to the regulation of the immune response support a role for vitamin D in the pathogenesis of autoimmune diabetes. Epidemiological evidence and observational studies suggesting that adequate vitamin D status is related to decreased risk of developing type 1 diabetes further corroborates this concept." https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/29597238
"Experimental evidence indicates that vitamin D may play a role in the defense against type 1 diabetes (T1D) as well as type 2 diabetes (T2D). Epidemiological data have established a link between vitamin D deficiency and an increased incidence of both T1D and T2D, whereas early and long-term vitamin D supplementation may decrease the risk of these disorders." https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21889571
The studies on vitamin D are endless. From the year 2007 to date, there are better than 45,000 peer reviewed studies on vitamin D posted at the National Institute Of Health (PubMed). And we wonder why African Americans are predisposed to chronic illness?
People with darker skin, are very prone to vitamin D deficiency. I am as white as you can get. I was taking a multi-vitamin with a 1,000 IU's of vitamin D. Playing basketball out in the sun. And when tested by my doc, was found to be borderline deficient. I can't imagine what levels people of color have without supplementing.
By the way, when I was diagnosed borderline deficient... wouldn't you know, shortly after, they found a tumor the size of a baseball inside my colon. Probably just a coincidence, but moving on….
It’s been known “forever” to use the word Dr. Fauci used,.. that people of color, produce less vitamin D in their skin…
"blacks are at increased risk for vitamin D deficiency because darker skin absorbs less sunlight -- the skin makes vitamin D in response to sun exposure" https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2018/01/180102114147.htm
“the general African American population appeared to have a similarly high prevalence of vitamin D deficiency.” www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/...
But they are not the only ones suffering from vitamin D deficiency/insufficiency…
“Vitamin D status has been studied on all continents and in most countries throughout the world. In total, approximately 5,060 epidemiological studies have been done according to a PubMed search conducted in February 2012. These studies revealed that vitamin D deficiency was prevalent across all age-groups, geographic regions, and seasons.” www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/…
“Vitamin D deficiency is evident throughout the European population at prevalence rates that are concerning and that require action from a public health perspective.” www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/…
I have written an article earlier,... presenting the evidence shown in studies, detailing the specific ways vitamin D fights viruses. Here's the link to my article,...
https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2020/4/5/1934310/-There-Is-Another-Pandemic-Besides-COVID-19-Ravaging-the-Globe
This recent segment on Lawrence's show, The Last Word, also adds weight to what I wrote in that earlier article,… on the specific benefits vitamin D has concerning this virus. They mention ACE2 and the natural antivirals our body produces,... in the hope of developing targeted therapeutics. Meanwhile, vitamin D has already shown in studies to address these targets. www.msnbc.com/...
I also posted in the earlier article, the research showing how the vast majority of those who enter the hospital, are vitamin D deficient. Also,.. those who develop ARDS (Acute Respiratory Disease Syndrome) are severely deficient in vitamin D. ARDS is what you develop when you become critical ill with this virus. It's not the virus that kills you, it's the development of ARDS.
I want to stress something at this point. Even thought there is evidence from studies, showing 3 specific ways vitamin D fights this virus,… I truly believe the more important issue,... is that vitamin D deficiency, likely put us at a higher risk of severe disease, when infected with this virus.
“Vitamin D deficiency is common in people who develop ARDS. This deficiency of vitamin D appears to contribute to the development of the condition, and approaches to correct vitamin D deficiency in patients at risk of ARDS should be developed.” www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/…
“Acute Lung Injury (ALI) and the more severe form Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) remain a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in the critically ill patient…. The evidence for the role of vitamin D in lung disease is growing - deficiency has been associated with impaired pulmonary function, increased incidence of viral and bacterial infections and inflammatory disease including asthma and COPD. Studies have also reported a high prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in the critically ill and an association with adverse outcomes.” www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/…
“Accumulating evidence suggests that vitamin D deficiency is linked to excess mortality.” www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/…
You will likely hear nothing on vitamin D relating to COVID-19 in the mainstream. Yesterday, the President mentioned zinc, which is known to reduce the severity of common infections. So who knows, maybe next week he’ll mention vitamin D?
The research I have been using is based mainly on another coronavirus (SARS), which is very similar to COVID-19 in how it operates. Their genome sequence is a fairly close match. SARS was deadlier but not nearly as contagious as COVID-19. But even though most of the vitamin D research is on another very similar virus, it's worth noting,... vitamin D has been found beneficial for many kinds of viruses, including many kinds of Influenza (flu).
Vitamin D is an essential nutrient, hormone, and immunomodulator. With the prevalance of vitamin D deficiency around the globe, I’m not surprised this virus has become the monster it is.
Here is a new article with references dated 4/8/20, that supports most of what is mentioned here…. newsrescue.com/…
Hopefully the news will become more widespread. A week ago, there were no such articles relating vitamin D deficiency with COVID-19.
Stay safe.
