If nothing else, let the COVID-19 pandemic and sham impeachment trial the Republicans put on (can you believe that was this year?) hammer home the importance of every election, not just the one for the White House. Because here’s the rub:
You know all those gun-totin’, Murican flag masturbatin’ chucklefucks who are marching for their right to haircuts and cheeseburgers with their compensation sticks? They’re gonna vote in November. Every single one of them. They’re gonna vote for Trump and anyone else with an R by their name.
The ammosexuals are going to vote.
The evangelicals are going to vote.
The Trump sycophants are going to vote (probably more than once).
They’re going to vote for Trump. For a greater Supreme Court majority. To keep the Senate and regain the House. To take back as much control as they can so they can continue to exert minority rule over the rest of us. To force us to work for scraps. To make us sick and kill us.
Yes, voter suppression is a thing. Yes, foreign interference in our elections is a thing.
But you know what else is a thing? Conservatives voting, en masse, in lockstep. No. Matter. What.
Conservatives don’t splinter and bicker when primaries are over. They back their nominee, regardless of actual merits or anything else (clearly). They vote. They vote for their guy. Without fail.
Conservatives don’t cast third-party “protest” votes.
Conservatives don’t whine about Ted Cruz or Mitt Romney.
Conservatives don’t sit elections out.
Conservatives vote. Every. Damn. Time. We have to match that.
The media won’t tell you this, but we outnumber them. Every poll shows our ideas are more popular than theirs. They know this, too, hence their dirty tricks – they can’t win fair, and they know it.
(While we’re at it: Honest question for the protesters (not that I actually expect an answer): if these stay-at-home orders are so egregious, where was the outrage when they were implemented? Are you such bitches for His Orangeness that you only jump when he tells you to?)
The right wants us to stay home. They want us to fight and bicker. They want us to choose between sitting this thing out and risking our health and the health of our loved ones to exercise our civic duty. They don’t want us to vote for a Democrat, no matter who it is. They don’t want us to act like them in the voting booth.
But if we do? We beat them, and it won’t even be close.
Look, I get that you had a preference. That’s what the primary is for. I’m an Elizabeth Warren guy (and there’s an entire blog entry’s worth of anger on my part that for the second straight presidential election cycle, we’ve taken the best, smartest, most prepared candidate and just tossed *her* aside). But when Nov. 3 comes, I’m voting for anyone on the ballot with a D by their name. I will risk COVID-19 to make sure Donald Trump’s a one-term dictator.
We all have to do that – because that’s how we win. That’s how we finally start cleaning up this goddamn mess.
If we don’t? Things are only going to get worse.
