For my book proposal, No Clear Link: How the NY Times Helped Elect Trump in 2016, I researched the NY Times’ campaign coverage from May to November 2016 and found these results:
Clinton Foundation: 260; Trump Foundation: 62
HRC Emails: 849 Trump University: 177
I don’t need to remind you which were the ultimately greater scandals.
Has the Times learned a lesson from this disparate and unbalanced coverage? The jury is out, but on one comparison, it appears they have a way to go.
The E. Jean Carroll Trump rape story was in the news in June and July 2019, and the Tara Reade Biden story primarily in April and May 2020.
From June 16 to July 16, 2019, the Times had 34 stories in which E. Jean Carroll was mentioned.
From April 9 to May 9, 2020, the Times had 68 stories in which Tara Reade was mentioned.
This is a rough comparison that, if anything, underestimates the greater coverage of the Reade story because the Reade story is ongoing, and the Carroll story faded out by mid-July.
Do your job, Times!
