Donald Trump is barely even pretending to care about the novel coronavirus anymore, even as new cases spike in the U.S.
All along, he’s treated the crisis as if it’s dozens of women accusing him of sexual assault: Claim it’s all a hoax and wait for it to go away.
Unfortunately, this is a health emergency, not a PR emergency, and there’s no way for him to bluster his way out of it.
Joe Biden, who’s campaigning to be the first U.S. president since Barack Obama, has noticed, and he has some pointed comments for the sweat-smudged sumo suit squatting in the Oval Office.
NBC News:
Joe Biden on Thursday warned that President Donald Trump’s attempts to dismantle the Affordable Care Act will have disastrous consequences on Americans who become infected with the coronavirus, demanding in a fiery speech that the "callous" president end a lawsuit that is seeking to terminate the landmark health care law.
"He’s like a child who just can’t believe this has happened to him. It’s all whining and self-pity," Biden said of Trump's coronavirus response during a speech in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. "This pandemic didn’t happen to him. It happened to all of us."
…
"I cannot comprehend the cruelty he is inflicting on the very people he is supposed to serve," he said.
I can comprehend it. But only because I live in the M.C. Escher ayahuasca fart of a universe where Donald Trump became president instead of in one of the trillions of alternate universes where he died alone in the bathroom stall of a Sheboygan Old Country Buffet.
Anyway, it’s good to see Biden getting out there and, best of all, hitting on a campaign message that’s sure to both rankle Trump and wake up a significant number our citizens: namely, the fact that Trump is still trying to take health care away from vulnerable Americans in the middle of one of this country’s worst-ever health crises.
"Some survivors will experience lasting health impacts — like lung scarring and heart damage," he said. "And if Donald Trump prevails in court, insurers would be allowed to strip away coverage or jack up premiums simply because of their battle with the coronavirus," Biden said, referring to the Trump administration’s ongoing legal effort to invalidate the Affordable Care Act — the signature health care law otherwise known as Obamacare.
The 2018 blue wave swept dozens of Republicans away largely because of health care — and the (correct) perception that Democrats were stronger on the issue.
Biden is taking the fight directly to Trump now — and it’s a beautiful sight.
