Coronavirus continues to flare up amidst attempts to get the Trump campaign up and on message. So you get Pence saying things like, “we’ve flattened the curve” when places like Arizona, Texas, and Florida are still climbing up the front end of the first wave of the roller coaster to Re-Open America.
Then Trump and Pence took a time-out to decide that neither one of them ever heard what everyone else was talking about this weekend—that Putin paid a bounty to Taliban fighters to target American soldiers. It sounds treasonous, or at least of high concern to every soldier in the field and that Trump saluted at West Point.
So what is the “leader” of the free world to do in response to that? Deny it…and also...go golfing.
Not just on Saturday, but Sunday too.
The Saturday WH Pool Report clocked Trump and his motorcade entering the golf course at 10:24 a.m. Anne Gearan of the Washington Post noted three protesters. Two were holding signs “Trump makes me sick” and “Dump Trump” by the club entrance, another was walking a dog and gave a one-finger salute to the motorcade.
By Sunday, the Pool Report clocked Trump arriving at 9:50 a.m. with Lindsey Graham. There was a small group to meet him. One held a sign saying “I bought Mary’s Book”. By the afternoon when Trump and Lindsey (who reportedly raised concerns about Russia via twitter—which means Trump probably had him just hold the putters) exited, there were around 30 protesters gathered.
There were also some early July 4th fireworks. Dan Boyer, Washington Times reported, “A Jeep drove by, repeatedly, bearing a “Trump 2020” banner fluttering on a pole.” Protesters speaking to me later said they observed the man making illegal U-turns up and down Loews Island Blvd. At one point, he pretended to drive into one of the protesters crossing the street in front of witnesses, prompting them to call the Sheriff’s department.
A picture later was posted in a neighborhood Facebook group. It’s not clear whether he was pulled over for his bad driving or whether he was actually issued a ticket. But attempts to make an issue out of supporting him, his presumed legal fees via a GoFundMe campaign were drowned out by supporters of the protesters on the page and the post was removed.
It should be noted that the person who was targeted by this reckless driving was involved in earlier focused attempts at the golf course during previous protests. Both Sunday and several months ago, the sprinkler system at the golf course was turned on protesters. Sometimes the water coming out had a fetid smell. The first time the sprinklers were turned on, it made the sidewalk area slippery and this same protester was injured while walking.
The sprinklers were turned on again long before Trump’s motorcade left. As can be seen in the YouTube video they wet not only protesters but also two Black Secret Service officers. This prompted one of the protesters to recall the times when firehoses were turned on Civil Rights protesters.
Sprinklers are a much more feeble attempt of Trump and his supporters to invoke the past. But we shouldn’t be surprised. Recall that Trump originally had a Civil War plaque complete with his family crest and name at this golf course to commemorate the “River of Blood” site noting that:
Many great American soldiers, both of the North and South, died at this spot. The casualties were so great that the water would turn red and thus became known as ‘The River of Blood.’ It is my great honor to have preserved this important section of the Potomac River!
But eventually, history caught up with Trump and the plaque was removed, since this whole thing NEVER HAPPENED.
Deny. Deny. Deny.
But the truth is catching up.
