The best antidote to hot takes is hard data, and the latest Daily Kos/Civiqs poll is here with your cure. This survey of 1,513 adults was conducted online from July 26-29 and reveals that 53% of Americans not only oppose Donald Trump, but they see almost nothing that could change their minds. Of the 42% of Americans who support Trump, just 34% say there’s nothing that could shake their support, and 8% say they are still open to changing their minds.
As the coronavirus pandemic stretches on, Americans are deeply worried about school and business reopenings. Nearly two-thirds (63%) are extremely or somewhat worried that state reopenings will cause an increase in coronavirus cases. Fully 60% are uncomfortable with reopening schools and universities in the fall; 45% are very uncomfortable.
Other noteworthy findings in this month’s poll include:
- A majority of Americans (54%) believe that wearing a face mask greatly helps prevent the spread of coronavirus, and 56% wear a mask whenever they leave their home.
- However, wearing a mask has become a partisan issue; while 82% of Democrats report wearing face masks whenever they go out, just 27% of Republicans do, and a mere 20% of Republicans believe that wearing a mask helps prevent the spread of coronavirus (vs. 83% of Democrats).
- Black Americans (64%) are more than twice as concerned as white Americans (29%) about a coronavirus outbreak in their local area.
- One-third of Americans know someone who has contracted coronavirus or has had it themselves.
- Over one-quarter (26%) of Black Americans know someone who has died from coronavirus (vs. 13% overall).
- If a coronavirus vaccine becomes available, 28% of Americans currently do not plan to take it, and 27% are unsure.
- Half of Americans support the ongoing national protests against racism and police brutality.
Additional issues surveyed include satisfaction with both the U.S. government’s and state and local governments’ current coronavirus response, as well as Fox News and MSNBC viewership.
This poll’s findings demonstrate that, while unshakeable support for Donald Trump sits at just 34%, a healthy 53% of American unwaveringly oppose him.
This month’s survey also provides strong evidence that frequent Fox News viewers are deeply disconnected from mainstream Americans. While just 23% of Americans are very comfortable reopening schools and universities in the fall, a solid majority (53%) of frequent Fox News viewers are. Only 20% of frequent Fox watchers believe that wearing a face mask helps prevent the spread of coronavirus, while 54% of Americans stand by the well-established science behind this fact. And while fully one-half of Americans support the recent widespread protests against racism and police brutality, a whopping 85% of these frequent Foxers actually oppose these protests.
