Yesterday, on the anniversary of the El Paso shooting, Joe Biden released a message (see video below).
After speaking to the families of those who lost loved ones, as only Joe can, he moved on to speak to all of us. He said:
“This anniversary is a moment to resume the purpose we felt a year ago, to recommit to the battle for the soul of this nation, a battle against the forces of white supremacy, which this president has encouraged and emboldened. A battle against the spread of hatred and poisoned ideas in every form. A battle against the plague of gun violence that steals lives in horrific mass shootings but also in unreported tragedies of lives lost to gun violence every single day. We have to get these weapons of war out of our communities. And hold accountable the gun manufactures who do some much damage with impunity. You know, last year, in the days that followed the El Paso shooting, I said that we as Americans must do what our current president can’t: Stand together. Stand against hate. Stand up for what, at its best, this nation believes. Today, if anything, that charge feels even more urgent and important. We have to unite to defend our values, our democracy, the very idea of American democracy. This is our fight and together we will win it. And let’s not forget that. God Bless you all and may God bless the people of El Paso ”
These are not just words from Biden
Joe Biden has taken on the National Rifle Association (NRA) on the national stage and won – twice. In 1993, he shepherded through Congress the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act, which established the background check system that has since kept more than 3 million firearms out of dangerous hands. In 1994, Biden – along with Senator Dianne Feinstein – secured the passage of 10-year bans on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines.
And his plans for his presidency would make a huge difference if enacted → Joe Biden’s gun plan calls for universal background checks and an assault weapons ban
Biden’s plan…. would still amount to the largest changes to America’s gun laws in more than two decades. It includes universal background checks, an assault weapons ban, more resources toward the enforcement of existing laws, a public push for the development of “smart guns,” and incentives for states to adopt “red flag” laws, which allow courts to confiscate guns from people deemed a risk to themselves or others and develop gun-licensing systems.
The proposal includes other ideas. It would close several loopholes in existing law. It would repeal a law that made it harder to sue gun manufacturers and sellers when they make or sell guns they should have known would be diverted to criminal uses. It would limit the number of guns an individual can purchase to one per month. It would require safe storage.
