Big news today out of Kentucky:
State Rep. Charles Booker announced Friday that he is endorsing U.S. Senate candidate Amy McGrath, who defeated him in a tight primary election in June, in her attempt to oust Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell from office.
Booker and McGrath competed to win the Democratic Party's nomination for the general election matchup against Kentucky's longtime senator this November, with Booker running as an unabashedly progressive candidate compared with the more moderate McGrath.
Now, he's throwing his weight behind her as she tries to beat McConnell, who has never lost a reelection race since he first got elected to the Senate in 1984.
U.S. Rep. John Yarmuth (D. KY-03) also endorsed McGrath’s campaign today. McGrath also received praise for her criminal justice reform plan:
State Sen. Gerald Neal, a Black Democrat from Louisville, said this week that McGrath’s plan shows an "extensive commitment" to many key issues facing the African American community.
Many Booker supporters will automatically shift their support to McGrath as the Democratic nominee, Neal said, but others will need to be persuaded. Without a concerted effort by McGrath, some could sit out the election.
"We can’t afford that when really she’s not the problem," Neal said in an interview. "The problem is Mitch McConnell. And the game is not just winning her seat. The game is changing the Senate so that there’s a Democratic majority."
