So I’m sitting in my living room watching a YouTube video on roller coasters and bwap, the power goes out. 7:58 a.m. It’s time to go take that long bicycle ride I had been wanting to do for a couple of weeks (but the wildfire smoke had been keeping me indoors). Damn the smoke, full pedal ahead.
I’m sure glad the power went out.
The Daily Bucket is a nature refuge. We amicably discuss animals, weather, climate, soil, plants, waters and note life’s patterns.
We invite you to note what you are seeing around you in your own part of the world, and to share your observations in the comments below.
Each note is a record that we can refer to in the future as we try to understand the phenological patterns that are quietly unwinding around us. To have the Daily Bucket in your Activity Stream, visit Backyard Science’s profile page and click on Follow.

I was so glad the power went out because if I’d stayed inside I might have missed the fact that the smoke was gone and it was a gorgeous day! I grabbed my camera and water bottle, pumped up the bike tires a bit and took off.
The ride is a good long one. I was hoping for some nice photo opportunities.
First photo, wildlife, but just a trace.
Then, joy of joys, a photo “first” for me, at least here in Quincy.
What a fine day and a fine ride it was turning out to be. A little further along and there’s a nice Red-tailed Hawk in a tree:
It’s over to the left of the pumpkin.
A bit further along Chandler Road there was a congregation on top of a power pole. Although I only show one in these photos there were several all at one time, flying on and off and occasionally pecking at the wood crosspiece.
By this time I’m well along my ride. I will put in here that I met a lot of people out walking and jogging along Chandler Road, which is a bit of a “back road” and doesn’t get a lot of traffic, which is good because the road is rather narrow. The drivers are courteous, however, and tend to go safely slow. I appreciate that. Soon I was at the junction of Chandler Road and Highway 70 and the nicer part of the ride was over. But there were still a couple of photos to take.
Once on Highway 70 it was time to just get pedaling back home. And wouldn’t you know it? Before I got home I picked up a “goat head” in my front tire. Happily, the tire didn’t go completely flat before I made it all the way back home. Repaired now, of course, and ready for The Next Adventure.
