When Al Gore released An Inconvenient Truth in 2006, he won an Oscar, an Emmy, a Grammy, and the Nobel Peace Prize. Since then, deniers have attacked Gore at every opportunity, but they’ve also tried their hardest to emulate his documentary’s groundbreaking mainstream relevance.
They’ve failed, but not for lack of trying. The latest example, found at WUWT, comes from Canada, where one filmmaker’s denial doc was apparently nominated for an impressive six awards at the illustrious and world-renown Alberta Film and Television Awards. Oh-so-cleverly titled “Global Warning,” the video apparently blames Calgary’s economic problems on climate policies. According to a story about it from last fall, the filmmaker started planning this documentary in 2008, and indeed, it sounds pretty stale, featuring the same cast of characters as similar works.
For example, Patrick Moore apparently figures prominently in Global Warning, and the Roundup-dodging, coal-sponsored, not-Greenpeace-founding, pollution apologist also appears in the oh-so-highly-anticipated Climate Hustle 2, Marc Morano’s sequel to CFACT’s 2016 attempt to mimic Gore’s success with a movie of their own.
As all of you waiting with bated breath for this denialist rehashing of anti-IPCC and Green New Deal myths will surely recall, the film was originally set to premier last April, but was postponed in March because of theater closings. At the time they said that the “movie is too important to permit anything but an optimal release,” and since theaters “were going dark for six to twelve weeks… [they] had no choice but to postpone.”
And it certainly deserves all the best, given that the film is narrated by big time Hollywood actor Kevin Sorbo, who you may recognize as the actor who played Hercules back in the ‘90s, if you recognize him at all.
In the much-longer-than-twelve-weeks since March 19th, surely Morano and CFACT have been pushing for people to strictly follow suggested COVID-19 social distancing and mask wearing efforts to ensure that their film can get the “optimal release” in theaters it deserves, right?
Of course not! Morano’s been spending this time ranting and raving and retweeting about “the great hysteria” of masks and social distancing, effectively encouraging exactly the sort of behavior that’s prolonged the pandemic and has prevented movie theaters from premiering his movie.
So instead of just releasing it online around Earth Day, they’re now releasing it on September 24th, as an online streaming event.
Don’t worry though, you’ll still need to pay for the luxury of subjecting yourself to a movie-length version of an all-caps screed in the Breitbart comments section. Because while one might expect that a movie about elites secretly exploiting fears for cash would be free so that anyone who wants to know the truth can see it, tickets to Climate Hustle 2’s online event are actually $14.99.
So say what you will about the obvious desperation of denial docs like Morano’s, but the man never takes a break from the hustle.
And since the odds are slim that there’s anything new in the film that he hasn’t already tweeted out twelve times and then turned into a ClimateDepot post, it’s also probably mostly made of recycled materials!
