Comic Book Pages and Sketches by Matt Z
My name is Matt Zimmer, creator of Gilda And Meek And The Un-Iverse.
What is Gilda And Meek about?
It's about several things at once. It's a story of a Lucky Universe in a Multiverse teeming with Unlucky Ones and how our hero navigates that to her own advantage. It's a funny animal book that bit by bit reveals a huge fantasy and science fiction underpinning, much like Bone. It starts off as an erstwhile comedy until you realize it's actually been a drama the entire time. It's a story that after you read all 92 issues, you'll want to reread them again, as the best reading of The Un-Iverse isn't the first, it's the second. It's a bunch of random and seemingly unrelated characters and stories building and crossing over until they collide in an epic 19-part finale. It's about the antagonistic and loving relationship between the hero Gilda and the kid who looks up to her, Bernadette, and how their feelings for each other prove there is no wrong way to love a person. It's a political satire parodying the ridiculousness of the age we live in made more ridiculous by the fact that real life is crazier than my story's outlandish examples. It's about the fact that evil is uncool and mundane, and it's neat to have heroes to like and root for, and where the heroes are more interesting than the villains. It's about a strong female hero whose gender is irrelevant to the story at hand and is merely a strong hero who happens to be a female. It's about all of these things and none of them at the same time. Mostly, it's a way for me to work through my psychological crap. Which is what I think most writing boils down to for people.
The last exhibit focused a bit on the sidekick of my comic book, Meek. Now I’m going to show a bit more of my hero Gilda.
The first picture is from an an early action sequence from the third ever issue of Gilda And Meek entitled “Don’t Logic Santa”. It is a bit crude but I think it’s the first decent bit of motion drawing I’ve ever done.
🌑
While I have done a little great artwork from time to time in my comic, that’s an exception, and the comic’s artwork is mainly crude. I feel like only showing the perfect stuff would be totally misrepresenting things to any potential new readers.
I am just as eager to shares my flaws and failures with other people as much as I am my successes. Talking about what does and doesn’t work is part of my process, and I love sharing that with the reader. Gilda And Meek is messy and unprofessional, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. You see the warts as they are happening, and are allowed to enjoy and appreciate them, which is weird and neat.
The pencil drawing of the exploding building here kind of sucks. Stipulated. But it was a turning point for when I started to suck less, so it excites me, and that’s why I wanted to share it.
I love talking about this stuff, man. It’s just, not too many people are willing to listen. I hope more people check out my stuff. It’s all in there.
🌑
The next picture is a sketch of Gilda from the finale of The Un-Iverse “The Terran Wars”. I like the incongruity of her being a funny animal cartoon and a total badass action hero all at once. Fun fact: Gilda’s actual divine superpower is the always accurate ability to identify and point out b.s. via her “b.s. detector”. And because The Un-Iverse lacks sneaky villains, and because everyone (good and evil) is pretty open about their agendas, I never have to violate it, or say the. detector failed for some nonsense, badly-written reason. I bet I had a lot more fun coming up with lots of reasons Gilda is always right, than the Once Upon A Time producers did creating multiple lame excuses as to why Emma Swann’s supposedly flawless lie detector was always wrong.
🌑
The third picture is the cover for the 45th issue of The Un-Iverse and the final issue of the first volume, “The Mistress Augatha Arc”. This has never been seen anywhere else.
🌑
The first (crudely penciled) 34 issues of my comic book can be read for free at my handy-dandy blog Welcome To Gilda And Meek And The Un-Iverse. You can also find a section of Sketches, (many of them characters you haven’t seen yet) as well as a prose story. Check it out!:

I’m saving the rest of the issues for myself in case I ever want to take them to a publisher.

Variations on a Theme by MEL in PGH
When asked about the inspirations for my artwork, I truthfully say that I am more technique driven than anything else. I guess that’s the Scientist in me that a girl just can’t shake. These pieces come from an affinity for black and white pottery, the intrigue of Zentangle designs and the frustration of commercial black porcelain clays that just do not cooperate in our kiln. This is my new black clay formulation made with the normally white porcelain in our studio. It is combined with a matte white underglaze on top and sgraffito Zentangle designs.
