Multiple reports have FBI documents warning of far-right violence in the coming days. An internal FBI bulletin obtained by ABC News says every state capitol in addition to the U.S. Capitol could be targeted between now and Inauguration Day. State, local, and federal courthouses and buildings are also under threat.
“The FBI received information about an identified armed group intending to travel to Washington, DC on 16 January,” according to the bulletin. “They have warned that if Congress attempts to remove POTUS via the 25th Amendment, a huge uprising will occur.”
Meanwhile, Yahoo News is reporting on a Dec. 29, 2020 report from the FBI’s Minneapolis field office warning of planned Boogaloo violence at state capitols and the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 17. The Boogaloo extremists had “identified law enforcement sniper locations and considered breaking into federal buildings for use as firing locations, if fighting occurred,” and, “One Boogaloo movement follower indicated the building with the snipers would need to be blown up in order to protect Boogaloo fighters in the event of a gun battle during the event.”
In short, the far right is planning for a lot of armed violence. Those plans started well before the attack on the U.S. Capitol and have continued since. Maybe now law enforcement is taking the threat seriously? It sure would be nice if they’d show us they were taking the attack that already happened seriously and would give some form of formal public briefing about it both as part of reckoning with what already happened and preparing for—and, gosh, maybe trying to prevent—the violence that’s currently being planned.
