Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) announced Wednesday that starting next week, lawmakers will face hefty fines if they refuse to go through newly installed metal detectors to enter the House chamber.
Pelosi said that the House will adopt new rules when it returns to session Jan. 21 to mandate stiff fines for bypassing security: $5,000 for the first offense and $10,000 for the second. The fines will be deducted from lawmakers' salaries.
“It is tragic that this step is necessary, but the chamber of the People’s House must and will be safe," Pelosi said in a statement.
Why is this necessary? Also from The Hill:
Tensions flared Tuesday evening between a handful of House Republicans and the Capitol Police over new metal detectors that were placed outside the House chamber in the wake of the attack on the Capitol.
The lawmakers were heard by reporters complaining about the detectors and railing against Democrats as they tried to enter the House chamber to vote, saying they were not consulted by Democratic leadership about the decision to install the devices.

Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.), who has touted her desire to carry her Glock pistol in the Capitol, was also seen by a reporter setting off a detector and refusing to turn her bag over to the police for inspection.
Representative Boebert’s Glock was nowhere to be seen last Wednesday as violent Trump supporters invaded the Capitol, so one has to wonder why she even carries it. Anyhoo, we’ll get to find out how much her “desire” is worth to her. Five grand is a hefty hunk of change.
