It’s been clear for some time that Franklin Graham has used and abused his father’s legacy to carry water for the religious right and for Trump. It looked like he was coming to his senses when he asked his followers to pray for “President-elect Biden”—a move that had a lot of deplorables howling.
Unfortunately, earlier today, Graham fils showed that at bottom, he’s still a deplorable. He took to Twitter to lecture the ten Republicans who joined in impeaching Trump.
He posted a longer missive to Facebook in which he claimed the Democrats impeached him just because “they hate him and want to do as much damage as they can,” and accused the Republicans who voted for impeachment of joining in on a “feeding frenzy.”
There is so much wrong with this that it’s literally impossible to know where to start. Riddle me this, Franklin. Even if Trump did any good for this country, was it worth the daily shame and disgrace he brought? Was it worth the racist dog whistles, the degrading of women, the corruption, the attacks on his rivals?
Now let’s discuss the 500 pound gorilla in the room. Are you saying that any good Trump did offsets the horror the nation experienced last Wednesday? Was it worth the Capitol Police and DC Metro Police who were beaten up by those thugs whom your dear one incited? Was it worth that Capitol Police cop who was literally bludgeoned to death?
And was it worth the Senators and Congressmen who feared for their lives? Was it worth the prospect that some of these thugs were casing the joint the day before with the help of Republican lawmakers? Are you saying that Liz Cheney, Adam Kinzinger, Dan Newhouse, Jaime Herrera Beutler, John Katko, David Valadao, Peter Meijer, Tom Rice, Anthony Gonzalez and Fred Upton should have ignored that horror, what they saw with their own eyes?
With your ignorant and misguided words, Franklin, you have spat in the faces of the officers who were injured on Wednesday and their loved ones. You have spat in the faces of the lawmakers who spent much of that afternoon fearing for their lives. In short, you, Franklin, have confirmed what a lot of us have suspected all along. You are nowhere near the man that your father was. The only thing you share with your father is a full name.
Indeed, you have shown yourself to be of a piece with your dear one. Just like Trump, you have no soul, no heart, and no conscience. Only someone without a soul, a heart or a conscience could even think that the ten Repubs who voted for impeachment should have any shame for what they did yesterday.
By all rights, this should be the end for Franklin Graham’s ministry. These words should hang around him like an anchor.
