As you can see, our pup met the local Dragon yesterday. Recently, K1 has noted that around mid-afternoon our pupdog Vorpal gets stir-crazy demanding attention. What we’ve learned is that she wants to go for a walk. NOT a walk to do her business (although that often happens!), and not a walk on the sidewalks with cars passing by. Given she was found twelve years ago as a Very Small Pup abandoned next to a highway with her sister, and that when we adopted her we had to literally carry her around the corner off the busy street we live on before she’d potty, I understand the no-sidewalk desire. But our fenced-in backyard doesn’t do. No, she wants to be away from cars and in new places to sniff and explore. We’ve taken to calling these walks Sniffy Walks. The goal isn’t distance, it’s how many leaves you can smell! We let her take the lead where we go once we’ve driven to a suitably less-busy spot, and by the time we’re done she’s alert, tail up, and ready to chill out and dream about her escapades once home.
It was fairly miserable out today, and in addition K1 and I had a bunch of driving to do (no, not headed to the mall or to visit friends, but to practice in advance of Friday’s driver’s test!), so we gave her an alternate enrichment task. She’s VERY food motivated, so we had her choose one of her three kibble-fillable toys (yes, really… lay them all out and see which one she noses) and filled it for her to spend the afternoon getting the treats out. She’s learned that if she picks it up and drops it on the floor, kibble often falls out… so all you hear for an hour or so is BONK snarflesnarflesnarfle BONK. She’ll even pick them up and carry them to the carpeted living room, where apparently the maneuver yields more treats. Ergo, these toys are known as the Bonk Toys.
We sometimes forget that not everyone knows what these words are, and get strange looks when we mention them. Which got me thinking about those unique words and phrases we use in our own families that need explanation to others. Grab a beverage and join me across the Story Break!
Here at Top Comments we welcome longtime as well as brand new Daily Kos readers to join us at 10pm Eastern. We strive to nourish community by rounding up some of the site's best, funniest, most mojo'd & most informative commentary, and we depend on your help!! If you see a comment by another Kossack that deserves wider recognition, please send it either to topcomments at gmail or to the Top Comments group mailbox by 9:30pm Eastern. Please please please include a few words about why you sent it in as well as your user name (even if you think we know it already :-)), so we can credit you with the find!
Let me share a few of our Home Words:
- When K1 was small, she couldn’t quite say Squirrel. To this day, two decades later, they’re Furrels.
- When K2 first arrived home with us we knew he liked spicy food. We offered a particular hot sauce that he used like ketchup (and does to this day. His present the Christmas after Netroots New Orleans was a GALLON of Tabasco sauce). As he was learning English at the time, it is and forever will be Batasco Sauce.
- I don’t know the origin of this word, but one of our favorite vegetables is Spearguts. It’s even better when covered with Sprinkle Cheese (Parmesan).

This comment by orrg1 is a little long, but I think very profound. From Swedish liberal’s What Franz von Papen might teach Republicans – and the rest of us
