Something big and wonderful happened again in the world of comic books and the story of Superman. On the heels of the revelation that the character of Jon Kent, the new Superman, the son of the original Superman Clark Kent and Lois Lane, is bisexual with a love interest named Jay Nakamura, comes another earth-shattering change — Superman’s motto has been changed from “Truth, Justice, and the American Way” to a more inclusive and more international “Truth, Justice and A Better Tomorrow.”
The new and improved motto was announced by DC Chief Creative Officer and Publisher Jim Lee at DC Fandome, an online event revealing news, trailers and first look videos at forthcoming films, TV shows and games.
Right-wing world, with their faux patriotism, is going apoplectic again.
Here is the announcement from the Daily Planet!

It’s a bird...It’s a plane...It’s Superman!
With a nod to the past and an eye toward the future, it was announced today at DC FanDome that Superman’s motto is evolving to “Truth, Justice and a Better Tomorrow.”
“Superman’s new motto of ‘Truth, Justice and a Better Tomorrow’ will better reflect the global storylines that we are telling across DC and to honor the character’s incredible legacy of over 80 years of building a better world,” said DC Chief Creative Officer and Publisher Jim Lee. “Superman has long been a symbol of hope who inspires people from around the world, and it is that optimism and hope that powers him forward with this new mission statement.”
The new motto, which will be used in main continuity for Clark Kent’s Superman, will be featured across all mediums including comic books, film, TV, video games and more. As comic book fans already know, the DC Multiverse has featured multiple Supermen over the years, sometimes even at the same time. For more information on the DC Multiverse, visit dccomics.com.
In honor of the real-world superheroes who are striving to make this world a better place, the next generation of Superman characters like Jon Kent will be fighting for “Truth, Justice and a Better World”, as first introduced in SUPERMAN: SON OF KAL-EL #1.
www.hollywoodreporter.com/… provides some background on the changes in Superman’s patriotic ties -
Yet this is far from the first time Superman’s patriotic ties have been reexamined.
In 2006, Bryan Singer’s Superman Returns movie had Daily Planet editor Perry White ask, “Does he still stand for truth, justice, all that other stuff?” The film’s co-screenwriter Dan Harris explained to THR at the time, “He’s an international superhero.”
In 2011, the 900th issue of Action Comics had Superman renounce his U.S. citizenship and declared, “I’m tired of having my actions construed as instruments of U.S. policy. ‘Truth, Justice and the American Way’ — it’s not enough anymore. The world’s too small. Too connected.”
The reaction from right-wing world is predictable after this one-two-super-punch this week.
The characters on Fox and Fiends are having a very sad day.
Laura Trump (who?) is very upset.
Twitter is awash with right-wing hysteria. We will avoid publishing them here,
A nice thread with some historical perspective by Kurt Eichenwald. “The American Way” was not in the original Superman comics and only made a brief appearance in the 1940’s.
More from G. Willow Wilson, American comics writer, prose author, essayist, and journalist -
We covered the announcement of the sexuality of the new Superman last week in diary “Superman's bisexual son triggers a new bout of homophobia on the right”.
There is much joy and pride over these developments in the civilized world.
But not for Republicans who just want culture wars — over anything and everything Democrats, liberals, progressives and the rest of the world does. It’s to keep the base angry and cowering in fear. Unfortunately, much of it works. And we have to keep fighting to make sure that these purveyors of hate and division do not succeed.
Do republicans even read super-hero comics? Comics generally have a liberal vision for the world anyways, where superheroes are fighting for the common man and for what is "right", "good” and “noble.”
Meanwhile, let’e enjoy the ascent of man, Superman and DC fandom to greater heights and let’s enjoy this trailer of the new Batman movie, starring Robert Pattinson and set for release on March 4, 2022.
