Hooters is one of those places that, when the aliens come down years from now, to research what happened to our civilization, they will take special note of. They will look, and likely, telepathically communicate, “It looks like the slide started right about..here!” “Yep, definitely here. About the time the male of the species abanonded his family to spend his weekends watching gladiators with an elliptical ball while stuffing his face with fried food watching women serve him who are half naked.”
That said, I do not want this to degenerate into an anti-waitress screed. We should not judge a person for the legal means by which they feed their families. What we should do however is make sure that their hindquarters do not have to be on display while serving us our artery clogging delights.
Hooters is adjusting its uniform policy to make its controversial new shorts optional in response to outcry from employees on social media. According to a spokesperson for Hooters of America, staffers will now be permitted to choose between the new shorts - which some have described as so skimpy they're "like underwear" - and the original longer shorts.
"As we continue to listen and update the image of the Hooters Girls, we are clarifying that they have the option to choose from traditional uniforms or the new ones," the spokesperson wrote in an email to Insider. "They can determine which style of shorts best fits their body style and personal image."
According to the spokesperson, the shorts were "the result of a collaboration with Hooters Girls and have been worn for months in several Texas markets with overwhelmingly positive feedback." Since debuting in select Texas locations, the shorts have since expanded to other states.
So this started in Texas..with overwhelmingly positive feedback. Of course it did. Now consider that last sentence about “feedback.” This required a customer to be interviewed or do a survey, right? What do these surverys ask? I have theories:
1. How were the wings?
2. How was the service?
3. Did you server display the appropriate amount of booty?
4. Would you just like to go ahead and say to Hooters “Screw it, serve me naked?”
I do not frequent these types of establishments. I see a certain type of toxic male in even fully clothed sports bars, I can’t imagine what it must be like to go to Hooters, or its more directly named competitor, Twin Peaks.
Now Twin Peaks is interesting, because some years ago my wife and I were hungry late one night and it was the only thing open in Frisco, TX. We had never heard of it. We honestly thought it was a restaurant from Colorado. Then we enter and see half naked women that were dressed like loggers. And nobody seemed to care about Coors, the banquet beer, at all!
We settled for Whataburger.
As I said, we must not confuse revulsion at the concept for disrespect towards the women who work there. My main concern is that the workers maintain a say in their work environment.
But we can’t stand by if a company thinks it is ok to degrade people, in any field. I am glad Hooters made this decision, but if it were truly serious about respecting the employees, they would allow them to wear pants and a polo. So really, this is about pleasing the majority male clientele who visit there.
Speaking for only myself, this male is happiest when the employees serving me, are happy.
And warm.
