Recently wrote a diary about how the left needs leaders. A couple of people chimed in and disagreed. At least they stuck to the context of the story, so my heart goes out to them.
One guy talked about how, during the union strikes in the 1920’s and 1930’s, when the cops would come along and ask who the leader was so they could arrest him, every person in the line said “I’m the leader! I’m the leader!”
And that’s fantastic. Solidarity is key to our success.
But the truth is only one person was the de facto leader of that union strike.
Likewise, the legendary story of all of the slaves repeating “I am Spartacus!” when the Romans came to arrest him...it’s an inspiring tale.
But the fact is, only one person was Spartacus, and he was the leader.
The left does not have that, and I’m at odds regarding how to get someone to take charge and man the helm, at least at first, until someone more capable comes around.
Because it will make a difference if we, the left, had an extra-legislative leader to help us coordinate acts of resistance.
I know someone will chime in and say “Bah, that’s bullshit” because after all this is DK where the K stands for Kontrarian.
But think about it….
Imagine two teams in the Super Bowl, and just before kickoff, one of the head coaches is removed from one of the teams. Is that team more likely to win, or lose?
Imagine a battle about to commence. Just before dawn, one of the generals is removed from one of the armies. Is that army more likely to win, or lose?
Some leaders inherit their status. Some vie for it.
Others are called.
We have AOC, and Ilhan, Ayanna, and Rashida.
And that’s good. They’re the inside crew.
We need an outside crew.
George Takei, Alyssa Milano, Rosy O’Donnell.
That would be a good start, but...not likely.
The head controls the hands, the feet, and farts….
If we had the kind of leadership that could coordinate a sick-out basically anywhere in this country, at any time...we’d have them by the balls.
How do we call upon a leader?
