Amid news of a recent COVID-19 surge in Europe intertwined with increased transatlantic travel, Carrie Underwood, the “Before He Cheats” singer and reality television star who signalled her opposition to vaccinations and mask mandates, will proudly spread the coronavirus by travelling to New York City and performing at the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
Yes, the same Carrie Underwood who pulled a Vince Vaughn/Mel Gibson and decided to be unhappy about being called out indirectly at the CMA Awards, when Luke Bryan made a joke about being “immunized”, if not “tested”. Bryan was taking shots at Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who tested positive for COVID-19 after being “immunized”; both Mike Fisher, Carrie’s husband and star hockey player for the Nashville Predators, and Carrie Underwood herself showed support for Rodgers refusing to take the vaccine.
But back to Carrie’s visit to NYC. It’s bad enough that Carrie Underwood will go through New York City crowds unvaccinated and unmasked. But what if Carrie Underwood, all of a sudden, decides to chant “Let’s Go Brandon” loudly on the MTA? Or even decides to cough and spit at the Whole Foods worker because the worker herself politely told Carrie to put on a mask? (It may be a bit of an exaggeration, but considering all the news today...) All of this, in a place where COVID was an especially traumatic event for many people? Anti-vaxxer Carrie Underwood performing in one of America’s most prominent events will apparently be great for the first-responders and essential workers who sacrificed their mental health and sanity through the pandemic.
It really is not right. As Carrie Underwood is becoming a folk hero for far-right anti-vaccine/anti-mask activists, much like Eric Clapton… the duet between Carrie Underwood and alt-right wannabe Jason Aldean is currently experiencing a surge in airplay on country radio stations. Carrie Underwood still has plenty of listeners on Spotify. Pop radio stations, especially “adult contemporary”-formatted stations, still play “Before He Cheats” ad nauseum. Music listeners turn to Carrie Underwood for the holiday spirit. Carrie Underwood still performs the Sunday Night Football theme song on NBC, for a league that blackballed Colin Kaepernick for standing up against police brutality and injustice. Carrie Underwood’s clothing line is still on sale at Dick’s Sporting Goods.
Just another example of the public’s complicity when it comes to dealing with celebrities that boost dangerous viewpoints and actions. (Also see Morgan Wallen and Chris Brown.) Even Spotify’s artist block feature has yet to make a dent on an artist’s stature. Cancel culture my foot!
