I think the likely Supreme Court ruling against abortion can only be seen as a decades-long failure on the part of Democrats in power. It was some combination of miscalculation, mistakes, misplaced faith in the power of our institutions, and lack of will.
The Republicans will come after birth control next. But Democrats in power have a chance to block that and protect birth control as necessary medical care.
I hope Democrats in Congress will quickly pass a bill to protect birth control. It would be a first step towards a subsequent bill to protect abortion as a normal medical procedure. A large majority of Americans, Republican and Democrat alike, support birth control.
I emailed the following note to my two Democratic Senators:
The Senate has apparently already failed (over decades) to protect abortion as a normal medical procedure.
But you have a chance to deflect some of the building anger at the Democrats' failures, by passing a bill that protects birth control -- for both men and women, both preventative and morning-after -- and declares it to be necessary medical care that must be covered by any programs the federal government supports. Don't let the fact that such a bill would be widely popular stop you.
If you don't do this, we can only conclude that Democrats in power don't really care about the death of our Democracy.
