For once, I disagree. More below the page notes.
Video page notes:
As Mitch McConnell tells he will "absolutely" support Trump if he gains the Republican nomination in 2024 there is now no longer any internal GOP guardrail to prevent a second attack on democracy like the one Republican leadership attempted on January 6.
The time of appeasing the fascists is now over. The "9/11 Commission" style investigation will only waste the Democrats' control of the presidency and both houses of Congress. They must go directly to a Special Prosecutor to put Trump, McCarthy, Hawley, Cruz, and the other seditionists in jail. They must use the Insurrection clause of the 14th Amendment to disqualify Trump from further office. They must eliminate the filibuster and enact every conceivable piece of legislation to fight voting suppression.
There can be no discussions about the future of democracy with the Reublican-Fascists. There is no one left in that party of traitors with whom one can discuss.
Personally, I think there’s a whole lot of wiggle room left; miles and miles, actually. McConnell will absolutely support Trump if he’s nominated, sure. Will he support him running for the nomination, three years from now? Well, nobody asked him that, did they?
While I’m loath to begin any statement with “Trump couldn’t possibly — ,” the scenario that would be necessary to put him once again within reach of the Presidency is one I have trouble with imagining without laughing.
I’m all for prosecutions happening with all due speed, if it’s possible, but I don’t see McConnell’s statement on Fox News as anything more than McConnell sounding supportive while being non-committal. “If we get a foot of snow in August, I’ll absolutely come over and shovel your driveway for you. Count on it.”
