1) A library
“When I have a house of my own, I shall be miserable if I have not an excellent library.”
Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice
I’ve never read a Jane Austen book (something I plan to do this year) but I have known this quote since I was a teen. I lived by the quote when I first read it and I still do.
Hell, I’ve lived by this quote even when I haven’t had a house of my own...or anyone else’s. I can remember many days when I was homeless with nothing but the backpack on my back and the backpack contained anywhere from 5-15 books along with my other belongings and essentials.
It is also true that “bookpiles” might be a better word for what I usually have because when I do have a house...a room of my own...books are everywhere, they cannot be contained. I have tried the Kindle-thing simply because of the physical space issues...didn’t and doesn’t work.
Truthfully...if I don’t have a library, then I don’t have a home.
2) Strawberries
Strawberries have been my absolute favorite food since I was a kid. I don’t know why and I no longer question it.
I love strawberry flavored just-about-anything.
I am a little taken aback that they sell strawberry-flavored milk in the grocery store nowadays. I’m even more taken aback that I always seem to find the money to buy it.
3) The subway/el- I grew up in a pretty big city (Detroit, MI back when Detroit had a population of 1,000,000+) but Detroit public transportation only had buses, then. It was actually on a visit to Chicago when I was 4 or 5 that I first rode a subway or an el.
The first subway that I rode on a regular basis was NYC’s...and now...to me, a city isn’t a city unless it has some sort of subway or rail line (my love for subways/els is probably, at heart, a love of and for big cities).
Even Detroit has that hideous People Mover thing downtown and even some light streetcar service once again.
I have favorite rail lines (Red Line in Chicago), favorite stops (Belmont stop on the Red/Brown Line in Chicago and the Harvard Square stop on the T in Boston)…
I even own a t-shirt (I have this in black).
I think that an subway/el train remains one of the best places to see a kaleidoscope of a given society in a city.
It’s one of the favorite things I like to do when I’m in a city that is new to me.

My evenings at the helm, I try reeeeallllyy hard to publish everything without regard to content. I really do, even when I disagree personally with any given nomination. In the middle of a long, alliterative thread made possible by Nonna Nancy's scorching tweet against Qevin MqQarthy, Q-Baqersfield (Qern Qounty), Qossack bobhuntsman gives us:
It’s the Coup Klutz Qlan!!!
Perhaps I might have spelt it the Qoup Qlutz Qlan, but that's a minor detail. From Kerry Eleveld’s front page post on Senate Republicans declaring war on House Republicans.
