Woodland Park, a public area created during the Great Depression by the WPA, is located in Kalispell, Montana. Kalispell is, of course, named for the Salish-speaking Kalispel Indians who currently have a reservation in eastern Washington. The name Kalispel means “Camas Eaters.” Reflecting the racism of many people in the community, the Native American heritage of the area tends to be invisible. In Woodland Park there is a Community Spirit Monument made up of about 2,000 tiles reflecting the diversity of the Valley.
Shown below are a few of the Monument’s tiles.
