The best antidote to hot takes is hard data, and the latest Daily Kos/Civiqs poll is here with your cure. This survey of 1,673 adults was conducted online from March 12-16 and finds that 53% of Americans approve of the American Rescue Plan pandemic relief bill recently signed into law by President Joe Biden. A majority of Americans (51%) approve of the way Biden is handling his job as president, and 62% rate him as performing at (30%) or better than (32%) their expectations.
As we pass the one-year mark of coping with the COVID-19 pandemic, 25% of Americans believe that things will never get back to normal. A devastating 26% of Americans report that someone they know has died from the coronavirus. While vaccines are being made increasingly available, fully 23% of Americans still say they will not get vaccinated against COVID-19. Republicans are the most unwilling to receive the vaccine, with 46% refusing, compared to only 3% of Democrats.
Other noteworthy findings in this month’s poll include:
- 42% of Black Americans know someone who has died from the coronavirus.
- Most Americans (57%) believe that climate change is happening and is caused mostly by human activity.
- 54% of Americans support a student debt cancellation plan, whether it is cancelling all student debt (17%), cancellation in income tiers (29%), or some other plan (8%).
- 57% of Americans support making daylight savings time permanent.
Additional issues surveyed include COVID-19 vaccine preference, support for a third-party candidate in the next presidential election, and viewership of Fox News, Newsmax, One America News Network, and MSNBC.
This poll’s findings demonstrate that Biden and his pandemic relief plan have broad support even as most Americans either have already taken or plan to receive a COVID-19 vaccine.
This month’s survey also provides strong evidence that frequent Fox News viewers are deeply disconnected from mainstream Americans. Despite the fact that 51% of Americans approve of the way Biden is handling his job as president, just 3% of frequent Fox News viewers approve. Just 15% of frequent Fox News viewers believe that climate change is real and is caused by human activity, versus 57% of Americans overall.
