Are we the only country that doesn’t have a national standard for how elections to national office are conducted?
It doesn't seem rational that we allow states to legislate rules for how elections for President, Vice President, and the US Congress are held.
Why not allow the states to enact laws for how elections for their governors on down are held? States could decide whether they wanted to have their elections on the mandated Federal Election Day or on another day.
If a state where the governorship and legislature were controlled by the same party they could gerrymander to their heart’s delight and disenfranchise the hell out of people likely to vote for the opposition party. While this is clearly undemocratic and un-American at least it would only effect the state.
