CNN Medical Analyst , cardiologist Dr. Jonathan Reiner, says, “ A surprising amount of death will occur soon ...”
The US is averaging about 19,455 new cases over the last seven days, a 47% increase from the week prior, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. And a third of those, CNN Medical Analyst Dr. Jonathan Reiner said, come from five hot spots: Florida, Louisiana, Arkansas, Missouri and Nevada.
"In places like Missouri where ICUs are packed, you're going to see a surprising amount of death," Reiner said on Sunday.
At Mercy Hospital in Springfield, Missouri, 91% of ICU patients are on ventilators and many are in their 20s, 30s and 40s, Chief Administrative Officer Erik Frederick told CNN on Saturday. That is especially concerning, he said, because at the peak last year there were only 40 to 50% of ICU patients on ventilators.
Typically, spikes in Covid-19 cases leads to a rise in death rates three to four weeks later as a small percentage of the infected are hospitalized and deteriorate. "We will start to see an increase in mortality in this country," Reiner said.
What is particularly frustrating for many experts, Reiner said, is that the deaths are "completely avoidable" now that vaccines are available. But about one-third of those 12 and older in the US haven't received the vaccine yet, CDC data shows.
"The vaccines we have work really well against this variant. It doesn't need to be this way," Reiner said.
Dr. Howard Jarvis, an emergency medicine physician in Springfield, told CNN on Monday that his sick patients are all unvaccinated.
"If they're sick enough to be admitted to the hospital, they are unvaccinated. That is the absolute common denominator amongst those patients," he said. "I can see the regret on their face. You know, we ask them, because we want to know, are you vaccinated? And it's very clear that a lot of them regret (not being vaccinated)."
Across the country, more than 99% of US Covid-19 deaths in June were among unvaccinated people, said Dr. Rochelle Walensky, director of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
They note later in the article that the vaccination rate has dropped dramatically. In my diary yesterday, I quoted from Dr. Reiner who said that (1) Why would republicans get vaccinated when they believe the former guy who says it is a hoax and overblown ? (2) The former guy, in act of insanity and complete apathy to life, only secretly got vaccinated and isn’t promoting getting vaccinated. His word would have tremendous force for his voters. (3) Over 100 House Republicans were vaccinated but refused to admit it because it is unpopular in their districts. Their cynicism knows no bounds . They value the vote of these people, but not their lives.
Dr. Reiner: Over 100 members of Congress all of them GOP members who refuse to tell their constituents whether they have been vaccinated (shakes head). They’ve all been vaccinated, every single one of those characters have been vaccinated .
Maya May: right
Dr. Reiner: how cynical; they won’t tell their constituents that they’ve been vaccinated because they know that it’s kind of unpopular in their district . So, they’re willing to let their constituents die, right, rather than lose votes.
Dr. Reiner calls Trump’s secrecy about getting vaccinated “world-class nuttiness” and then says imagine if the former president of the United States went around and said , “You have to get vaccinated!” , Maya replies, “We’d be out of this ! We would be out of this !”

I can understand why some African Americans may be reluctant to take the vaccine because of our history and racial disparities in medical care. Yet, controlling for income and education, African Americans are getting vaccinated at about the same rate or better. However, due to lack of opportunity and our history of discrimination and structural discrimination, there is a racial disparity in education and income (among other SES criteria). This seems to be good news on the vaccine front . Others may have immune issues. However, it is completely different for republican anti-vaxxers who are promoting false ideas about science and those who want to “own the libs”. In my view, this last group consists of not very good people. I still regret their passing, even so. The unvaccinated are clearly far more at risk. I keep seeing 99% to 100% of those who are either hospitalized or worse who died due to the novel coronavirus are those who are unvaccinated. I hate anybody dying. Those most committed to not getting a vaccine would be the least likely to get it and most at risk. That seems to describe the republican anti-vaxxers more than anybody else. Based upon the link above, it seems likely that republicans will either get vaccinated or ________. A grave concern, however, is that the viruses will continue to mutate as long as they are circulating among the population. The vaccines will have to keep up. And republican politicians, especially the former guy, have the ability to largely end this by telling his people to get the vaccine. He simply doesn’t even care about his own people. He cares only about himself. Same thing for the House Republicans who were vaccinated but refuse to tell their constituents that they were vaccinated and that they (the constituents) should too. However, what do they say, “ I was just joking . The pandemic is real. It is a serious threat to life. You should get the vaccine ? “ And their people are so against science, it is hard to make gains (evolution, climate change, ...).
