From President Biden today:
In a statement earlier Monday, Biden said, "We stand with the Cuban people and their clarion call for freedom and relief from the tragic grip of the pandemic and from the decades of repression and economic suffering to which they have been subjected by Cuba's authoritarian regime."
"The Cuban people are bravely asserting fundamental and universal rights. Those rights, including the right of peaceful protest and the right to freely determine their own future, must be respected. The United States calls on the Cuban regime to hear their people and serve their needs at this vital moment rather than enriching themselves," he said.
Nancy Pelosi joined in as well:
Aggrieved Cubans protesting government dysfunction gained a powerful voice on Monday when Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) praised the demonstrators' bravery and condemned all efforts by the communist government to stifle rights of dissent.
"The call for freedom and basic rights by the people of Cuba peacefully taking to the streets and marching is an act of great courage," Pelosi tweeted. "I support the Cuban people in their pursuit of liberty and condemn any violence or targeting of those exercising their rights."
Yes! Well said! Decades of oppression indeed. I was never a fan of that vile sumbitch Fidel Castro, a strutting, egomaniacal dictator who crushed all semblance of human liberty in Cuba. He jailed or murdered opponents, strangled all press freedom, was viciously homophobic, and ran forced labor camps for his “enemies”. Castro also tied Cuba to the hideous regime of the USSR, helping to trigger the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. Now, finally, there seems to be a mass rising against the heirs of the Castro regime. I urge ALL Democrats to join with President Biden in supporting the people of Cuba. Enough of dictatorship is enough!
FREEDOM FOR CUBA! NOW!
