The contours of Trump’s tactics in Afghanistan have now become clearer. It was an opportunity to resurrect another terror attack and the potential for a new foreign war to engage his second term but only after getting that Nobel Peace Prize.
Why else brag about increasing the military budget while calling for major foreign troop withdrawals. There would be room for a second term Venezuela invasion because there simply aren’t new enemies for Space Force yet. This fulfills the tendency for the GOP to leave military debacles for Democrats to fix.
The booby prize if he lost in the 2020 election would be a booby trap for his Democratic successor.

In 2018 Trump wanted a means to achieve the Nobel by using Afghanistan, having failed in other realms. Asking Pakistan to release Mullah Baradar, imprisoned since 2010 was a means to get that medal.
-
In 2019 Trump wanted a withdrawal to coincide with yet another attempt to get that Nobel Prize by getting the Taliban to come to the US on 9/11/2019 for ‘peace talks’. This would offset the concurrent mischief being created in Ukraine that would lead to the first impeachment.

In 2020, the same timing was planned for 9/11/2020 with a sweetener that 163 days from the February 2020 Doha meeting would be the last days for US troop presence. Just in time for 9/11/2020, in a peace talks 2.0.

In 2020, having failed again to withdraw all US troops, he tried the same 2019 stunt by having Pompeo do a 9/12/2020 photo op with the Mullah he released in 2018. That same Mullah may be the next leader of Afghanistan.

He threatened swing states with Taliban terror-refugees because he was getting desperate in the last weeks of the 2020 election campaign.

President Trump warned in characteristically over-the-top terms during a political rally in Michigan on Thursday night that Joe Biden, if elected, would invite “terrorists” into the suburbs by raising the cap on the number of refugees allowed to resettle in the United States.
He made these comments as the Afghan government – under pressure from his administration – reluctantly released high-value Taliban prisoners who were allegedly involved in killing American troops.
That jarring split screen happened on the eve of the 19th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, which originated in Afghanistan, where the Taliban provided a safe haven for al-Qaeda and its leader Osama bin Laden, the mastermind of the plot that killed nearly 3,000 people.
“We’re getting along very, very well with the Taliban,” Trump said at a news conference earlier Thursday.

His actions in December 2020, attempting by memo to remove all US troops from Syria, Germany, and Afghanistan reveal that Nero Decree path to the bunker, Trump going all scorched earth for Biden. Releasing twice as many Taliban prisoners as remaining US troops in 2020 would ensure a withdrawal as well as trouble for NATO and US forces during the January 2021 insurrection.

More obsessively, why keep lobbying for that Nobel Prize, aside from the disinformation claiming that being nominated multiple times was the same as actually winning it. Thanks to his guy in Norway's parliament Trump is still nominated in 2021 for the October announcement, which has the same odds as his ‘reinstatement’.
