This story was widely reported (see news search).
The gist of it is as follows:
-
A man in northeastern Illinois died from rabies about a month after apparently being infected by a bat he found in his room, marking the first human case of the virus in the state since 1954, health officials said Tuesday. The man, who was in his 80s, woke up last month and found a bat on his neck in his Lake County, Illinois, home. After the bat tested positive for rabies, the man declined post-exposure treatment, the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) said in a news release. CNN
My own take on this story is…
… but then, what the hell, I had nothing else original to write about that has been in the news to wile away some free time this morning, and of course you were one of the curious Kossacks who clicked on it.
We keep learning about people who for various reasons refused to be vaccinated for Covid dying of the disease.
This is what we know about how many vaccinated people die of Covid: “The number of cases and deaths among the vaccinated is very small compared to the number among the unvaccinated. A former Biden adviser on Covid estimated that 98 to 99 percent of deaths are among the unvaccinated.” (Reference)
While there are a number of reasons, some overlapping, why people refuse to get their Covid vaccination, we know that one of the primary reasons is related to political beliefs related to the idea that if you support Trump you don’t get vaccinated and don’t wear a mask.
We’ll probably never know why this man refused the four shots rabies vaccination which would have saved his life. It is certainly possible the man’s decision had nothing to do with politics. Perhaps he just remembered a time when rabies shots for people were painful. This is from Quora: “The older system of introduction of rabies medicine was so complex and painfull, but as the medicine have developed, now there is only 4 standard doses are given for any dog bites with the minimal amount of pain, the route of injection is intra dermal, you don’t even feel a glint of pain, it is so advanced and pain free and a very simple procedure.”
Perhaps he just didn't take the advice coming from his doctor a seriously as he should have considering the fact that deaths from rabid bats is so unusual.
If, on the other hand, the man refused the vaccination because of his political beliefs, chalk this up to one more death we can hold Trump responsible for.
Below: Afterthought
My late wife and I used to be cranberry farmers and appreciated our bats. This is where they lived.
