“Why do rural people always vote against their best interest?” This is quite possibly the most condescending phrase rural Democrats come up against on a regular basis—and we’re hearing it from our own. I can assure you that rural voters are no more likely to vote against their best interest than voters in urban areas.
So what is really going on here? Rural folks get taken advantage of at every turn—our resources are exploited, our labor is taken for granted, and our families are seen as disposable. And so far no one has been willing to show up to fundamentally change policy to help us solve our problems.
Rural America—The Heartland, The Breadbasket, the fill in the blank with folksy rhetoric. These communities are responsible for growing our food, and the stewardship of our land and water. Without these communities, urban life would not be possible.
For decades now we have seen Democrats focus on population centers to gain control of legislative bodies, and while it has proven successful in that mission more often than not—it has come at a great cost to rural America.
So what is the solution? To empower the Democrats living in these communities. They do not need a knight in shining armor. They need support to crank the volume on the work they are already doing.
What Rural GroundGame offers is a pathway to Democratic success everywhere. At Rural GroundGame, our mission is to develop and execute programs for the support, training, and development of rural Democrats. Programs that are created for candidates, campaigns, and committees to secure a deeper level of investment in and by Democrats in every zip code. This work is focused on getting Democrats elected, improving electoral margins, holding Republicans accountable for their public records, and upholding our shared values.
