The personal Twitter account for the COVID-19 misinformation expert Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene herself was permanently suspended after "repeated violations," Twitter announced on Sunday. How's that for bringing in the new year right? "We permanently suspended the account you referenced (@mtgreenee) for repeated violations of our COVID-19 misinformation policy," Twitter said in a statement NBC News obtained. "We’ve been clear that, per our strike system for this policy, we will permanently suspend accounts for repeated violations of the policy."
It's unclear what tweet specifically caused the company to react with the suspension, but the Georgia Republican seems to still have access to her professional account, @RepMTG.
She said in a statement NBC News obtained that she was suspended for sharing data from the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System."Twitter is an enemy to America and can’t handle the truth," Greene said. "That’s fine, I’ll show America we don’t need them and it’s time to defeat our enemies."
Twitter posted in December an elaborate policy for holding users accountable for misleading information they post about the COVID-19 pandemic. The company wrote:
The consequences for violating our COVID-19 misleading information policy depend on the severity and type of the violation and the account’s history of previous violations. In instances where accounts repeatedly violate this policy, we will use a strike system to determine if further enforcement actions should be applied. We believe this system further helps to reduce the spread of potentially harmful and misleading information on Twitter, particularly for high-severity violations of our rules.
Repeated violations of this policy are enforced against on the basis of the number of strikes an account has accrued for violations of this policy:
- 1 strike: No account-level action
- 2 strikes: 12-hour account lock
- 3 strikes: 12-hour account lock
- 4 strikes: 7-day account lock
- 5 or more strikes: Permanent suspension
Greene has been a regular GOP media darling, referring to Asian Americans as “yellow people” and calling Jewish Democrat George Soros a nazi in a series of video Politico uncovered. She also said in the footage that Muslim citizens don't belong in government, and Black people “are held slaves to the Democratic Party.” As of the virtual GOP 2021 goal of spreading COVID-19 vaccine misinformation, she has tirelessly devoted herself to the cause. She said “vaccine Nazis” are “ruining our country” as a guest on Steve Bannon’s War Room podcast on Nov. 2, 2021.
She also proudly proclaimed during a townhall that same month that she wasn't vaccinated because “the government has no business to tell Americans that they should take the COVID vaccine or not,” CNN reported. Meanwhile, she's had no issue profiting from the vaccine and owns stock in three prominent vaccine companies.
Hypocritical, racist, and entitled: Greene in a nutshell.
Add her Twitter suspension to the list of things to be thankful for heading further into the new year. Author Aja Raden created quite the list by the way if you need a pick-me-up.
