This past week, Senator Sinema did just that, and as a result an Executive Board meeting was held this morning to discuss potential action.
Following the Executive Board meeting this morning, ADP Chair Raquel Terán released the following statement:
"I want to be clear, the Arizona Democratic Party is a diverse coalition with plenty of room for policy disagreements, however on the matter of the filibuster and the urgency to protect voting rights, we have been crystal clear. In the choice between an archaic legislative norm and protecting Arizonans' right to vote, we choose the latter, and we always will. On the heels of their sham 'audit,' Arizona Republicans are already trying to push restrictive legislation to eliminate our popular and long-standing vote-by-mail system, jail election workers, and put Cyber Ninjas in charge of our elections. But this is not just about Arizona. Last year, Republicans in 19 states passed 33 different laws that will make it harder for people to vote."
"As a party, our job is to support our Democratic candidates, and we appreciate Senator Sinema's leadership in passing the American Rescue Plan and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. However, we are also here to advocate for our constituents and the ramifications of failing to pass federal legislation that protects their right to vote are too large and far-reaching. While we take no pleasure in this announcement, the ADP Executive Board has decided to formally censure Senator Sinema as a result of her failure to do whatever it takes to ensure the health of our democracy."
She had plenty of warning. The ADP told here back in September they would watch her specific actions on voting right and the Senate filibuster. Sinema talked out of both side of her mouth on this specific issue, but she didn’t fool anyone. Supporting the filibuster over voting rights is simply killing voting rights. Even the major Media outlets have as their ledes, “Voting Rights Dies.”
Yes, I know she could give a fuck what the ADP does. It just shows how stupid and delusional Sinema really is. It’s another nail in her political coffin though, only she doesn’t see that. I can’t recall a politician resurrecting their career after their own state party censure them.
Maybe you can find an example, but this is a good way for any of her primary challengers to start out their attacks on Sinema. And it is sign to Democratic donors to invest their money somewhere else than Sinema. And that is happening now as well.
The only ones who are now throwing money at her are Republicans, corporations and DC lobbyists. Probably the same DC lobbyists who have puffed up her ego with thoughts of running for president in 2024. Obviously, that crew wants a spoiler for 2024. But Sinema has too much bad baggage for any spoiler plans.
- Are independents and others going to support her nixing an increase in the minimum wage?
- Are independents and others going to support her protecting huge tax cuts for the wealthy?
- Are independents and others going to love how she watered down and sank all the good things in BBB?
- Last time I checked, most voters wanted to make it EASIER to vote not harder.
- When they overturn Roe this Summer, Sinema will block efforts to protect abortion rights with legislation because of the filibuster. How is that to attract support to her campaign?
In the end, she will not be some “mavericky” independent, but a full blown conservative Republican.
No, she’s burned her bridge to being a Democrat in 2024. And I seriously doubt that her stances will sell to independents. Republicans will use her but dump her when primary season comes around.
She’s moldy bread that has been toasted too long.
