At the time of writing, Democrat Summer Lee is set to win her bid for a seat in PA’s 12th Congressional district, making her the first Black woman from Pennsylvania to do so. Lee ran for Pennsylvania’s 12th (which includes Pittsburgh) against Republican Mike Doyle, who is staunchly anti-abortion and wants to cut funding for both Social Security and Medicare. (To be clear: This is not the Democrat Mike Doyle, also from Pennsylvania, who is retiring.)
Lee, as you might remember from past coverage here at Daily Kos, was elected to the state House in 2018, where she made history as the first Black woman from western Pennsylvania elected to the state legislature.
Lee, a progressive Democrat, was joined by Sen. Bernie Sanders on the campaign trail just days before the midterm elections on Nov. 8. Lee, an attorney and organizer in the labor movement, has been passionate about mobilizing efforts to get people to the polls on behalf of herself and fellow Democrats.
“The party of insurrection would have us believe that they have the answers,” Lee said to supporters and locals during the Nov. 6 gathering, as reported by local outlet WESA. “Who do you truly believe cares about public safety? The party of guns, guns, and more guns? Or the party of public education, the party of health care?”
Thankfully, constituents heard her, and she made history—again.
