Independence, Missouri, police said a vehicle [a Tesla — see below] with a mechanical issue caused a three-vehicle crash Sunday on Interstate 70 that claimed the life of a Lake Winnebago man.

Police were called to the westbound lanes of I-70 at Little Blue Parkway at 8:17 p.m. Sunday to investigate a crash involving multiple vehicles.

Police said at the time that three vehicles were involved and authorities were working to determine the cause of that crash.

Investigators said a 2019 Tesla had a mechanical issue that caused the vehicle to lose power and stop in the middle of the interstate.

As a result, police said other vehicles on the highway were unable to avoid crashing into the Tesla.

The driver of the Tesla, 74-year-old Terry L. Siegel of Lake Winnebago, Missouri, was killed.

Police said this incident remains under investigation.
