Are we having fun yet?
Back in the 1970s Bill Griffith's character Zippy the Pinhead asked this existential question. Always an interesting conceit, it seems more relevant than ever during a pandemic. I have been thinking about the concept of “fun” as the pandemic grinds on and on. With activities limited, one should make the best of what’s available.
I recently mused about what have been the most fun activities for me and what comes up is Netroots. A subset of these have been the various Kossack dinners and other get-togethers. So the commonality here is groups of people who share common interests, many of whom I already know; lots of friends.
Wikipedia says “The word fun is associated with sports, entertaining media, high merriment,[2] and amusement.” I see fun depicted on TV ads. Groups of young, attractive folks are at a table, laughing and showing lots of teeth, holding wine glasses. Wish I could join them. In real life I see couples at tables in their own realm, or arguing. This might be pandemic-related, of course. Perhaps a good measure would be “Time flies when you're having fun".
Graduations of fun might be: enjoyment, contentment, amusement, satisfaction, comfort, joy, or even bliss. These angle toward the individual, and hey, carpe diem. But for me fun is a group activity/experience.
What is fun for y’all? Do you even need fun in your life? Has the pandemic limited your fun opportunities? Hope for the future?
This gal did have fun fun fun by herself, till her daddy took her T-Bird away.
I had a lot of fun listening to this three times, so….fun alone.
