“Ukraine’s defense ministry announced it will use the AI’s facial recognition technology offered by Clearview. Clearview’s chief executive Hoan Ton-That confirmed the news to Reuters, the technology will allow the Ukrainian military to uncover Russian assailants, combat misinformation and identify the dead.”
This is being reported by Reuters. The original Reuters article focused on its use to identify the dead -using social media photos from Russia and Ukraine. But articles on this from other sources were worried that it could have false positives on the living at check points, and how dangerous that could be to people. Also the EU has the GDPR — general data protection regulation, which normally doesn't allow facial recognition software in public. Cynics were noting this was a way for the company to generate positive news, and get around the GDPR.
Another article was noting that it will be used to identify civilian dead, but also to get the identity of dead Russian soldiers to use in propaganda, making this a unique and new type of warfare. While it would exploit dead Russians ,the positive is it would remove one of the cruelest burdens of war, by identifying civilian dead, and letting families know what happened to their loved ones rather than wondering for years over their fate. While I can see the downsides of this tech on the battlefield — I think the positives are greater than negatives. Your thoughts?
