During a keynote session at this year’s SXSW festival in Austin, Texas, on Sunday, popular singer Lizzo shared her views against Texas’ abortion ban.
“The abortion ban is atrocious,” she said on March 13, according to Rolling Stone. “Mind your business. Stay out of my body.”
The comments follow Texas passing one of the most restrictive abortion measures in the country, in which abortions occurring as early as six weeks into a pregnancy are criminalized.
In addition to the horrific abortion ban, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott signed an executive order in February that considers gender-affirming surgeries for young trans people to be “child abuse.” As a result, doctors, nurses, and teachers are required to report families who help their children get such support to the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services. While the measure is temporarily blocked, Texas’ state attorney general said he will appeal the decision and take the issue up to the Texas Supreme Court.
Lizzo not only spoke up about the state’s abortion ban, but also about the anti-trans policies, emphasizing that “trans rights are human rights.”
“I’m proud to rep Houston, but I’m not proud to rep Texan policies right now. And there are very regressive laws being passed,” Lizzo said. “They are taking away the right for young children to have a chance to live authentically as themselves.
“We got a lot of other things that we need,” Lizzo added. “There are people in charge who can change things on a systemic level and they’re letting us down.”
But dropping the mic on Texas’ policies is not all Lizzo did. She also used her time on stage to drop news about her upcoming column.
“I worked real hard on this, so it better be good,” Lizzo said. “But it’s good.”
