Abortion bans are being introduced across the country at a rapid rate. At least 15 GOP-majority states have introduced bills that ban abortion despite circumstances of incest or rape. Amid these bans, those politicians supporting anti-abortion policies have made comments relating to the need to stop to abortions due to it being against God’s will. Additionally, many of these same individuals have referenced past experiences of either getting an abortion or helping someone get one and regretting it as a reason why they support abortion bans.
North Carolina Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson, a conservative who has repeatedly spoken out against abortion, is one of these individuals. According to NBC News affiliate WRAL, in a 2012 Facebook comment Robinson said that he paid for the mother of his “unborn child” to have an abortion in 1989.
“I’m not saying abortion is wrong cause I said so it's wrong cause God says so,” Robinson’s post read. In a comment on the same post, he said: “It's wrong when others do it and it was wrong when I paid for it to be done to my unborn child in 1989.”
A screenshot of the comment from Robinson’s Facebook account was posted by a Twitter user on Tuesday.
The comments from his post are still live and public.
“It's wrong when others do it and it was wrong when I ( YES I ) paid to have MY own child aborted in 1989,” Robinson wrote. “If you don't like post like these I suggest you unfreind me because I WILL continue to post anti abortion messages. If they offend you I do applogize.”
Robinson was elected in 2020 and has made multiple headlines for running on an anti-abortion campaign platform, WRAL reported.
"We allow the murder of the most innocent human beings on earth and we do it with impunity,” Robinson said at a North Carolina GOP convention last June, according to the outlet.
“Once you make a baby, it’s not your body anymore—it’s y’all’s body. And, yes, that includes the daddy,” he added.

While many GOP officials have made similar horrific comments, these comments from Robinson are important to highlight because he is currently the highest-ranking state Republican in executive office. Additionally, he is expected to be a gubernatorial candidate.
“It’s something that I’ve wanted to talk about for years, but there’s confidentiality that I have to be concerned about," he told WRAL in an interview Wednesday. Robinson said he planned to release a more extensive statement about the matter later.
Of course, controversial comments on abortion are not the only comments Robinson has made. He has also advocated for gun rights and repeatedly disrespected the LGBTQ community and Black Lives Matter movement.
“We cannot say that ‘Black lives matter,’ or ‘all lives matter,’ or ‘blue lives matter’ until we say ‘unborn lives matter,’ because that’s where we all start,” Robinson said at a January 2021 rally.
When asked about other Facebook posts and comments he’s made, Robinson told WRAL, “I’m not ashamed of anything that I post.”
