As you can see by Itzl's concerned look, this group is for us to check in at to let people know we are alive, doing OK, and not affected by such things as heat, blizzards, floods, wild fires, hurricanes, tornadoes, power outages, or other such things that could keep us off DKos. If you're not here, or anywhere else on DKos, and there are adverse conditions in your area (floods, heatwaves, hurricanes, etc.), we are going to check up on you. If you are going to be away from your computer for a day or a week, let us know here. We care!
IAN is a great group to join, and a good place to learn to write diaries. Drop one of us a PM to be added to the Itzl Alert Network anytime! We all share the publishing duties, and we welcome everyone who reads IAN to write diaries for the group! Every member is an editor, so anyone can take a turn when they have something to say, photos and music to share, a cause to promote or news!

Hello Friends… and congratulations. We made it to another Saturday. I am glad, for all of you who take these rides of weekly randomness along with me.
This week, it occurred to me that I have begu reading a lot of novels that in the past, I likely would have passed by simply on the bases of their genre. For most of my reading life, I have given romance novels a miss. That was, until a new friend came into my life and we began sharing our readings with one another. She has since bought several books for me to read, which in the past i likely would have scrolled right past.
Earlier this week, we were discussing the John Whick movies, a series that I have come to enjoy quite a lot, and to look forward to, despite its rough beginnings. (I damn near gave up when the dog died, i won’t lie). At this point, my friend said something akin to, “I’ll stick to my romance novels, thanks” and I asked her why she would spend so much time reading a genre which for the most part follows a formula, that means you know what is going to happen by the time you are past the first chapter? This is where she stopped and pointed something out to me that I had never considered.
“Romance is where women go to read about positive things happening to women, as opposed to every other genre, where we are killed, or traumatized, for the sake of the author’s plot.”
After a few minutes of silence, during which I would like to think I gave her statement the thought and consideration it deserves, I had to admit that for the most part, her argument was quite valid. I have since thought of a very few books I have read over the years that don’t fit her point of view, but for the most part, she is dead on.
I will probably still skip anything under the Regency, or Harlequin labels, but I am less likely to ignore a book just because the publisher’s tag-line marks it as Romance.
So the next time you are stuck with the question of what to read next, why not try something outside your normal beaten track?
